Playing the Numbers Game

M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender [Photo - Paramount]

Everyone seems to be buzzing about The Last Airbender’s Rotten Tomatoes score of 7%, asking things like “is it really that bad,” “is it actually worse than Marmaduke or Twilight: Eclipse,” or “is it really that bad?” It really is interesting to see how much discussion there is out there about scores and numbers and percentages alone on this movie compared to what discussion there is out there on what exactly made the movie so shitty. The Happening is quite possibly one of the worst acts of cinema ever perpetrated on the world, but knowing its Tomatometer score is 18% does nothing to clarify that. READ MORE!

Hate mail? RIGHT THIS WAY, BUCKO

We’ve pared down the length because apparently folks who have lives can’t stand to listen to us prattle on and on for hours and hours. We live to serve, condensed or no. Enjoy!

Kill a Commie for Mommy and Defend the Homefront, Wolverines-Style in Upcoming FPS

Ah, another reminder that it’s E3 trailer season in video game land.

Kaos Studios and THQ's upcoming FPS Homefront

On the menu today is Kaos Studios’ Homefront, an FPS set in the American heartland under occupation by North Korea. Clicky below the break for the ludicrous trailer, with its questionable insertion of current events. I’m surprised there aren’t any Gulf oil spill references in there. READ MORE!

Absolutely Gorgeous CG Deus Ex 3 Trailer

Here’s your daily reminder that E3 is coming up, along with all the requisite sexy trailers of games you won’t be playing for at least a year.

Is there a specific term for the synthy, future-y music used in Deus Ex, Mass Effect et al? Because I really can’t get enough of it.

PROS: protagonist’s fashion sense, stealth cloaky stuff, weapons and crap coming out of arms
CONS: silly newscaster’s future-victorian chic

Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be coming to PS3, 360 and PC sometime in 2011, which is incredibly depressing.

Triweekly Podcast: Summer Movies, Double Downs and Centipedes

Triweekly (or so), I gather with friends associates Mike Konieczny and Patrick Stone. We sit at a round table as if to summon eldritch spirits, consume a mighty, greasy dinner, and record.

Feel like something’s missing in your life? Clearly, the answer is meandering, blabbering and unfocused discussion on all things video games, movies, TV, etc. (and etc.)

Making Prince of Persia: Jordan Mechner

The original 1989 Prince of Persia, still one of the greatest games ever made

Prince of Persia came out in 1989 and has since spawned a slew of sequels and now a major motion picture. While video games movies aren’t exactly a new concept anymore, the fact that one of the folks credited on the screenplay is original series creator/designer Jordan Mechner has me confident the movie will be slightly better than most video game movie fare. Even excluding Uwe Boll’s oeuvre, there’s some pretty bad stuff out there.

Anyway, Mechner’s got a great blog which contains excerpts from his personal journals from the late 80s and early 90s developing the original Prince of Persia. It feels like you’re reading a making-of documentary of the game READ MORE!

My Desk Is 8-bit by Alex Varanese

You know that stop-motion classic NES video that’s been making the rounds on the internets?

I can only take so many cute iPhone gags and I am an avid opponent of rampant Nintendo nostalgia (I can’t tell you how much I loathe the Zelda and Metroid franchises and everyone else’s UNDYING DEVOTION to them).

This, however, is gorgeous and far superior.

Enjoy:

Rock Band 3 to Feature Ridiculous Multicolored Plastic Keyboard

Apparently, when you play through the Green Day: Rock Band demo (shudder), you’re treated to this little teaser screen, which features OH SHIT IS THAT A KEYBOARD
Rock Band 3

Hell yes. Here’s hoping Rock Band 3 won’t force me to abandon the hundreds of DLC songs I’ve downloaded for the second game. The folks at Woogmoog‘s art department have created a mockup of the new controller, check below the break to see it. READ MORE!
